The toll that a lack of state funding of higher education has taken on California’s overall well-being is extreme. We are a non-profit whose goal is to provide education and informational programs designed to help support the critical role played by the University of California, California State University System and Community Colleges as the primary drivers of our economy and our quality of life
California’s state funded support for a full-time CSU student has only increased by $198.00 in 22 years (1990-2012). That, plus the fact that California educates 98,450 more students today than it did in 1997, is the financial equivalent of adding an additional 8 Cal State campuses to the CSU system for the same amount of money.
California’s state support for a full-time UC student has actually decreased $10,950.00 in 22 years (1990-2012)! That, plus the additional 75,000 students California UCs are educating, means the equivalent of an additional UCLA campus and an additional UC Berkeley campus have been added to the UC system using less funding than California provided in 1997!
In 1976, higher education spending accounted for 25% of California’s General Fund. 40 years later, in 2016, that number has plummeted to a mere 10%. A decline that is the result of policies implemented by state legislators, as well as decreased budget flexibility due to a lack of funding guarantees and voter initiatives. Read more, here.
State funding for California’s public higher-ed systems has been drastically cut from already historic levels leaving the financial burden on our State’s students and families. Many deserving California students have been shut out from UC and CSU campuses due to underfunding. It is time for the State to take responsibility and reinvest in California’s higher education.
